Another Day - Another Road Trip

Took the three youngest (Adria had to work) out to dig up some trilobite fossils today. We woke up early and Jessica, Christina and Megan and I all went for a nice long drive.

We took one quick break in Eureka to look at the head frame there.

Megan looking good in the front seat of the Jeep.

We spent a while at U DIG Fossils and the girls had a great time. We didn't find that many, but right near the end, Christina walks up with this nice rock with an excellent trilobite right on it. She just picked it up off the ground.

After the fossils we drove a little bit farther up the canyon. Where there is the huge cliff looking off into the west desert.

Just a little ways from that the canyon turns and offers a great spot to hear your echo repeat and repeat. We spent some time there screaming at the top of our lungs just for fun.

The next stop was the Hermit's Cabin. This was occupied by Robert Stinson from 1920 to 1945. He was a native of Iowa and WWI Army Vet. He suffered from what was then called "shell shock." He hitchhiked to Delta after his discharge in search of peace and isolation. He worked for the state highway department removing rock from the old highway that ran through Marjum Pass, and in spring 1920 he made a home for himself by turning a small cave in a side canyon into a one-room stone cabin.

After leaving the cabin we headed south and out and around Notch Peak....some day I need to hike to the top of that baby....

We stopped for a quick lunch in Delta and then headed back home. We made one more stop in Eureka to check out this mine shaft.

I'm not sure how deep it is but there was a small rope tied to one of the pieces of rebar that was tied to a rock. We pulled and pulled and it took quite a while for the rock to come up......I'm guessing at least 100 feet if not deeper.
