A hole in a wall - - - literally.

We've been looking for those hidden gems of a restaurant. That little hole in the wall that make a great sandwich, excellent fries or some other treat.

The Vance Evergreen Center actually fits the bill. Literally. It's a gas station, repair shop, small convenience store with a small garden center and a small pet food treat store at one far end. There are a few picnic tables under a small patio.

Inside you'll find a small selection of just about everything normally found in ordinary convenience stores, such as potato chips and soda. Yet in the back corner is this small hole in the wall where you can order pizza, sandwiches, fries, onion rings and a few other things.

You place your order at the window. Pay up front and then take your food home or sit out at the picnic tables.

This little store also carries Cheerwine. This isn't wine. It's a Cherry soda of sorts. The girls now like this and will go to the store just to get a few bottles. It's from farther south then Virginia so it's not normally carried in the stores around here. Truckers that were travelling through started requesting it so the store started to carry it. Cheerwine even has their own song. If you want, they even have a current campaign to win a Cheerwine Van. If you win, you'll have to pick it up in North Carolina.

So now back to the Vance's Evergreen Center. The food - Well, it's simple yet good. Sorry, the photo actually makes it look pretty yucky, but it's not and we've been back 3 or 4 times.

They're always busy, which is a good sign of good food. We love the rings, the sandwiches, the pizza and the fresh brownies sold in the front.
